Kagamimochi (Japanese traditional Japanese New Year rice cake)

Kagamimochi (鏡餅) is a traditional Japanese New Year traditional decoration. It usually consists of two round mochi (rice cake). The smaller placed atop the larger mochi and mikan (my favorites Japanese orange) on top. I really don’t know what and why we decorate this kagamimochi in a new year. (humm, I need a research)

This Kagamimochi is placed in various place in a house and important places. Mostly we decorate this kagamimochi in a kitchen, living room, entrance, and in a car. I think this placement in a household is bit different depend on a religious persuasion.

I placed in my kitchen, living room and my car.

I will update more information later.. If I found out the meaning of this kagamimochi. On Dec 30th, we gathered and made Kagamimochi. We wash a mochi rice (rice for making mochi: rice cake) on 29th, and immerse rice in ice water over a night. We made kagamimochi for 4 families.
