Something A Little different....The First Of The Romans

One on-going project I have at the moment (and one which is going to go on for quite a long time!), is painting up a lot of Warlord Early Imperial Romans. Not for me, I might add, but fun nonetheless. Here are the first 2 cohorts- eventually I'll have a couple of Legions worth + all the Auxilia to do. So, quite a bit.
I'm not doing this alone, thank God, but as part of a team of painters in order to accomplish this massive task.

I've always wanted to do an Early Imperial army, but have never actually got round to it, one of those situations common to just about every wargamer, we all have "those projects" I guess, so having the opportunity to paint one for someone else will hopefully get it out of my system.
Early Imperials have always been the "classic" Romans for me, Square Scutem, Lorica Segmentata, I suspect my like of them goes back to a bunch of Timpo figures I had when I was a youngster.
The Warlord figures have been around for while, go together fairly easily, choices of sword-arm or pilum, a few different head choices. The ones in the pictures are a mixture of the basic set and the set sold as "veterans" - these give you a few extra choices - different heads and helmets, and battered shields. All the veterans have the additional magnia sword- arm armour a few legionaires adopted for the Dacian wars. Fortunately these are indeed for the Dacian campaigns so they will fit right in.
                       There are a few extra metal command figures mixed in- manufacturer unknown.
Anyway, I'm enjoying doing these, which is probably just as well, seeing as there are a few to paint! It makes for a good diversion from the WWII projects which I'm also doing for myself.
        So thats a few Romans, Next up, I'll be showing some rather lovely Dacian tribesmen to oppose them

Need For Speed Games Part 1: The Need For Speed, Need For Speed II

This week on Super Adventures, I've decided to finally write about some Need for Speed. It's the most successful racing game series of all time and it's been around almost as long as Mario Kart, but I haven't written about a single of one them yet!

The trouble with racing games, and the reason I don't write about them much, is that they're all about racing. I mean that's not a problem when you're playing them, many would even consider it a positive, but it makes writing about in detail a bit tricky as all you do is drive down a road, often in circles. Then if you do it right you get to go do the same thing someplace else! I could fill up space by taking lots of screenshots of cars and menu screens, but I'd run out of stuff to say fast as I'm not exactly an expert on the subject.

But I've thought of a clever solution: if I write about lots of Need for Speed games then I don't have to write so much about each one! And seeing as the 25th anniversary game, Need for Speed: Heat, is coming out in four days, I've decided to write four separate parts covering the series' first 10 years, in chronological order, starting with Road & Track Presents The Need for Speed and Need for Speed II!

Atomic Ed, Short Film, Review And Interview


As the synopsis points out, Atomic Ed is about the underdog becoming the person they need to be for the situation. It is a fun-filled short ride that makes you smile, even if you might get a little squeamish because it is in a horror setting.

I saw Atomic Ed at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website). It was nominated for Best Foreign Short, Best Ensemble Cast, Best Score, and Best Makeup.

This is a light horror setting that doesn't reach the gore level of recent television shows. It's a family friendly story everyone can enjoy.

Synopsis: When the body of one of the members of Mark's band is found horribly mutilated, the gang lash out on Ed, who has no choice but to become the person he has always dreamed of being.

The director, Nicolas Hugon, shared some information how his youth in Paris inspired him for Atomic Ed and being a filmmaker.

What was the inspiration for Atomic Ed?

I grew up with my friend writer Cyril Delouche in a suburban suburb near Paris (we also shot the film in the neighborhood of my childhood). At that time, we were watching a lot of horror movies, mostly American. And often, they took place in neighborhoods quite similar to ours.

I think that with the passing of time, my memories of youth have ended up mixing with the images of horror movies that we consume in high doses!

Atomic Ed is a tribute to all these films and my youth.

There is indeed a lot of my experience in Atomic Ed. Already, the alleyways you can see in Atomic Ed are the same ones I have walked with my mates for much of my youth.

After, of course, there is this fantasy a little clichΓ© of the teenager in love with the girl inaccessible and finally arrives at his ends.

Me, I did not arrive, but I was not beautiful as Oscar (who plays Ed in the film)!

What project(s) do you have coming up you're excited about?

Like all the filmmakers, I would like to shoot a feature movie one day of course!

I'm already trying to shoot a new short film by doing better than the previous one.

And maybe, other projects but it's a secret for the moment!

What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?

I grew up in the 80s and like all children of my age I was amazed by all the movies of this era Spielberg/Lucas/Zemekis. Films where the marvelous arose in the everyday life of teenagers. I think about The Goonies, Gremlins, Back to the Future. But also, the first Star Wars.

At the time, I did not even ask myself the question of how we made movies, I let myself be transported and then that's all. Then, I think I needed more and stronger emotions and I really became passionate about genre cinema.

I was traumatized by films like Robocop, The Exorcist, or Brain Dead that I discovered very young and that's when I really wondered how these people make movies. So, I watched the movie with another, more technical look, and then one day my dad bought a camcorder to shoot family movies. I started like that when I was 12, shooting horror movies in my parents' house and garden, splashing my friends with a liter of ketchup!

What would be your dream project?

This one, I have not dreamed of it yet!

I already dream of continuing to do what I do, I still have a lot to improve.

And maybe start shooting movies a little bit longer!

What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?
Cinema is a very time-consuming activity that tends to intrude much on privacy. When I do not make a film, I look a lot, I also discuss a lot with my friends about cinema. But I also find time to read, to see my friends, to play video games and to take care of my wife and my son.

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

Robocop of Paul Verhoven. This film, as I said earlier, traumatized me when I saw it when I was barely 10 years old. All this graphic violence, I did not feel well. Then, with time, he fascinated me, I discovered the second degree and the double reading that was hidden behind this film, which seems really nagging.

Since then, I watch it very often, for me it's a perfect film in many ways: the clarity of the screenplay, the rhythm, the structure of the film, the special effects, the emotions it summons to me.

This is the movie I would have dreamed of doing!

What Is SOMA's Safe Mode?

Tomorrow we will be releasing SOMA for Xbox One and along with this comes Safe Mode. This is a new way of playing the game that will also be available via Steam and GOG at the same time.

Since we announced Safe Mode there have been a lot of questions about it, so we thought this would be a good time to answer some of those and to clear up a few things. Here goes:


What is Safe Mode?
It is a version of the game where you cannot die - you are safe from harm. The game's various creatures are still there, they just won't attack you. If you've heard of the SOMA Steam mod "Wuss Mode", by steam user The Dreamer, then you should know the basic idea. The important thing to point out is that we don't simply turn off the creature's ability to attack and harm you. Instead, we've redesigned their behavior. Our goal has been for Safe Mode to not feel like a cheat, but for it to be a genuine way of experiencing the game. So we've considered what each creature should be doing, given their appearance, sound, and voice.

You can pick between Safe Mode and normal mode when starting up a new game.

Is the game still scary?
This obviously depends on what scares you, but the short answer is: yes, the game is still a horror game. However, since you can explore without a constant fear of failure, you will no longer have that type of tension. For people who aren't great at handling that aspect of horror gameplay, their journey through SOMA will be a lot easier in Safe Mode. But if it is the overall atmosphere that gets to you in a horror game - and, above all, the central themes - then game will still have plenty to be scared of.

What is the major difference in gameplay?
All of the puzzles, events, and so forth are still there. The big difference is that you'll no longer have to sneak past enemies. You don't need stealth in order to complete the game. Monsters might sound and act more threatening if they spot you, so there is still an incentive to being careful, but it's no longer mandatory to keep hidden. This will also allow you to explore some of environments more carefully.

Why release it now?
We actually considered releasing something similar at launch, but chose not to because we felt it would make the core intent of the game too unfocused. As people started to say that they really wanted to play the game and experience the philosophical sci-fi narrative, but couldn't because of the monsters, we started considering doing something about it. People liking the "Wuss Mode" mod was a good sign that we could solve this. However going back to a game you have already completed is not tempting so we put it off.

What eventually tipped the scales was the Xbox release where we wanted an extra feature to make the launch more interesting. Adding some sort of no-monster mode felt like the best option, and so Safe Mode was born! It also felt like it had been long enough since the original release, and the intended version of the game had been played and evaluated enough. Adding a new play mode wouldn't be a problem.

Will it come to PS4?
Yes! We hope to have it ready about 2 months from now. Sorry for not releasing it now, but a couple of issues have kept us from doing a simultaneous launch of Safe Mode.

Veins Of The Heartland

What's going on everyone!?


Today for the #2019gameaday challenge dear ol' dad and I played a game of Ticket to Ride on our tablets. 

Luckily for dad, I played an honest game and didn't cut him off on a route or two of his that he got on me which ended up winning him the game!

All in all, it was a great time and I can't wait to play again.

Hey, guess what I'm writing about on Super Adventures this week! Okay maybe the title screen makes it a little obvious, but I didn't see it coming. Here's a life hack: get amazing friends who'll occasionally drop a brand new game on you with no warning or explanation.

The least I could do in return was write about it, and I'm all about doing the least I can do, so here's my review of Indivisible, the latest game by the makers of Skullgirls. I don't know much about Skullgirls as I only play fighting games when I feel like mashing buttons and being humiliated, but I do know it's got some fancy cartoon animation so I'm coming into Indivisible with the preconception that it's going to look fairly pretty as well. I also know it's a bit of an action RPG inspired by Valkyrie Profile, but other that that I'm fairly clueless about it.

Out of all the privacy-focused products and apps available on the market, Brave has been voted the best. Other winners of Product Hunt's Golden Kitty awards showed that there was a huge interest in privacy-enhancing products and apps such as chats, maps, and other collaboration tools.

AI and machine learning rose as another note-worthy trend, but blockchain seemed to be the most dominating force in app development. Blockchain-based messaging apps and maps were hugely popular with Product Hunt users, who seem to value innovation and security.

For those users, Brave is a perfect platform. The company's research and development team has recently debuted its privacy-preserving distributed VPN, which could potentially bring even more security to the user than its already existing Tor extension.

Brave's effort to revolutionize the advertising industry has also been recognized by some of the biggest names in publishing—major publications such as The Washington Post, The Guardian, NDTV, NPR, and Qz have all joined the platform.
